Mount Pearl, Canada
We start out again on the Viking trail. This is the official road title for highway 430 that we have been traveling on for the last three days. The sun is shining and the temperature is near 60. There is a section of road through the national park that has new pavement. It is scenic, and traffic free. Lee leads and pretty soon the corners dictate the speed limit. We pay no attention to the posted speed. We lean hard into the corners hitting the apex of long sweeping corners. Ah, this is so much fun. At bridge construction we must stop for a few minutes, but get right back up to speed. This lasts for an hour then we must back down due to pavement issues. But is was so fun! We join back on to the Trans Canada Highway route 1 and head south east towards Saint Johns. We stop for lunch and go over the map and our options. We just decide to keep going till we want to stop. At a fuel and coffee stop we consider making it to St John several hours from where we are. Next fuel stop we make reservations at the Marriot in Saint Johns. There are a couple of guys there and we joke with them covering subjects as their funny accent, motorcycles, and one the guys beautiful sister! It’s the kind of experience you need to be there for but I need to write down so Lee and I can remember it. We have these everywhere we go now that we are out of Quebec. One guy drive up to us at this same station and said. ” I’m really jealous of you guys, I’ve always wanted to do something like this in my life, you boys have a good safe ride!” We head out again and see a fast moving bank of clouds ahead. As we go up in elevation, we drive right into the fog. This lasts for an hour, which causes the temps to drop some 25 degrees! We drive out of the fog and the GPS directs us off the highway to get to the hotel. We start going down twisty two lane roads through housing developments. The roads deteriorates to one lane gravel roads. At intersections a sign points to the right, GPS makes us go left! What the hell is the GPS doing to us? Then we recall that when in Montreal we set it to avoid highways! We continue and the moon is on our right then straight ahead, then in the mirrors, then on the left. We come to an intersection that is about 20 degrees uphill and sloped to the left too! We had to stop as we could not see right or left. When traffic cleared we had to navigate this dicey slope. Probably the most dangerous intersection I have ever experienced. The most dangerous thing we have done so far on the trip. I call uncle to Lee, begging him to disregard the fing gps and follow the signs to town. So the time frame to get to Saint Johns was 45 minutes but the damned GPS make it an 1.5 hour ordeal in the dark. And at the end of a long day of 495 miles. We are glad to have the reservations made as we slog into the hotel. Dinner next door at the bar is good and the bartender makes us drink the locally distilled rum Screech. Is is remarkable good.
